Carnie Wilson Gets Candid About Weight Loss
By Linda Childers, Special to Lifescript
What’s it like to lose – and gain – weight in the public eye? Carnie Wilson knows. In this Lifescript exclusive, the singer and reality star opens up about her lifelong weight struggle, the unflinching media attention and being a role model for her daughters…
Carnie Wilson is no shrinking violet. She shot to fame as one-third of pop group Wilson Phillips (and daughter of Beach Boy Brian Wilson), but she is almost as well-known for her weight struggle.
While other celebrities view “fat” as a dirty word, Wilson, 42, has been refreshingly honest about her ups and downs. In 1999, she even underwent gastric bypass surgery, which was broadcast online and helped her lose 150 pounds. She later posed nude for Playboy to show off her new body.
But eventually, some of the weight came back. By last June, after the birth of her second daughter, she weighed more than 200 pounds.
Now, Wilson says she’s determined to drop the pounds – once and for all. She’s working with Dr. Oz, who has created a diet plan to get her down to 150 pounds.
With characteristic openness, she’s sharing her latest battle of the bulge with fans on her reality show, “Carnie Wilson: Unstapled,” which airs on the Game Show Network. She’s also hosting the channel’s new “Newlywed Game,” which recently began its third season.
In this Lifescript exclusive, Wilson dishes about her diet downfalls, how she stays motivated and teaching her daughters to eat right.
What’s it like to struggle with weight in the public eye?
The best part is realizing that there are millions of people who are also trying to achieve a healthy weight. And that we all have spurts of diligence and times we lose our willpower.
4 Sleep Disorders Solved
By Stephanie Schorow, Special to Lifescript
Do you toss and turn at night or wake up feeling exhausted? You could have a sleep disorder that’s keeping you from getting the zzz’s you need. Find out what causes these 4 common sleep woes and how to banish them for good. Plus, test your sleep IQ with our quiz…
Sleep: New moms dream about it. Night-shift workers rarely get enough. But they’re not the only ones not getting adequate pillow time. Most women don’t either.
Adults need about 7-9 hours of sleep per night, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Yet most women age 30-60 years old are getting less – six hours and 41 minutes to be exact.
Unfortunately, it’s not just the resulting dark circles women have to worry about. Lack of sleep can trigger a host of problems, including:
- Daytime sleepiness
- Problems concentrating
- Poor performance on the job or at school
- Irritability
- Increased likelihood of illness
- Weight gain
“The more common the sleep loss, the worse the problems get,” says Douglas Kirsch, M.D., a sleep specialist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Experts agree that most people who boast about getting by on five or six hours of sleep are kidding themselves.
“They don’t realize how much better they would be with seven to eight hours,” says David Schulman, M.D., director of the Emory Sleep Disorders Laboratory in Atlanta.
Here are 4 common problems that get in the way of slumber and what to do about them:
1. Insomnia
What it is: Do you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep? It could be insomnia. Most people have the occasional sleepless night, usually during stressful times. However, about 10% of American adults report chronic insomnia. Women are more likely than men to report ongoing problems, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Reduce Your Child’s Risk of Obesity and Diabetes
By Julian Whitaker, M.D., Lifescript Alternative Medicine Expert
If you have diabetes and you’re a parent, you obviously want to do everything you can to prevent your children from having to deal with the same problem. One of the most effective ways you can do that is to make sure your kids avoid the weight problems that plague so many young people today.
Nearly a third of our kids are overweight, and 17% of those are obese — an important risk factor for diabetes. There’s a lot of talk about how to reverse this trend, and according to a study recently published in the journal Pediatrics, three factors have a significant impact on children’s weight: eating dinner as a family, getting enough sleep, and watching fewer than two hours of TV or videos a day on weekdays.
Of the more than 8,000 preschoolers involved in this study, those whose families followed these three routines were nearly 40% less likely to be obese than kids from families that adhered to none of them. It should be noted that most of the children watched more TV than prescribed, but overall it’s good news for you. These behaviors — which are firmly within your control — can have long-lasting health benefits for your kids.
Yours in good health,
Dr. Whitaker

2. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook, stirring often, until softened, about 2 minutes. Add turkey and cook, stirring often and crumbling with a wooden spoon, until cooked through, about 5 minutes. Add tomatoes, beans, cumin and chili powder; cook, stirring, until the tomatoes begin to break down, 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat, stir in cilantro and 1/4 cup of the salsa mixture.

Craving Something? Give In and Still Lose Weight
By Jennifer Gruenemay, ACE-Certified, Special to Lifescript
Are food cravings controlling you? If you’re like most people, it’s time to outsmart your food cravings! If you can’t stop yourself from giving into indulgent temptations, just cancel them out. When you get that intense craving for a hot fudge sundae, give in to it. Yes – have that sundae! Just cancel out the damage by making sure you make up for it BEFORE you actually give in.
Spend an extra 30 minutes at the gym, or spend an hour in the park throwing around the Frisbee with Fido. This will earn you the privilege of indulgence. As an added benefit, after earning the right to give in to your food craving, you’ll probably feel a less intense desire to do it. Temptations become a lot less enticing after exercise because you’ve worked so hard to earn it. But if that craving still lingers after your jog around the block, give in and go enjoy yourself! You don’t have to feel even the slightest bit guilty about it. Life’s always sweet when you create win-win situations for yourself.

Praise Yourself Daily
By Jorge Cruise, Chief Diet and Fitness Expert
Having trouble staying motivated with your fitness goals? Here’s my solution: Reflect on your good qualities every day. First, start with what you do well. Are you a good friend, mother or co-worker? Do your actions positively affect others in your life? Try to remember the good acts you’ve done throughout your life in detail.
You might remember the birth of your child or a good deed you did for someone in need. Recall a time when you were instrumental in making someone else happy. Recall every detail of that memory. For the next few moments, continue to dwell on details in your past when you lived up to your expectations for yourself. Realize that you have done more good than bad in this world. Allow yourself to feel grateful for all you’ve accomplished, then tell yourself, Yes, I will make the extra effort to improve my health and body today!
Generating this positive energy will help you overcome any mental setback, and you’ll be back in the gym in no time.

Natural Motivation
By John H. Sklare, Ed.D, Lifescript Personal Coach
I’ve always loved this time of year. As I write this today, Mother Nature is on full display bringing with her all the splendor and wonder of springtime. The trees and countryside are totally transformed, bursting with new life and totally enveloped in brilliant color. This annual display of growth stimulates your senses, suggests new beginnings and creates a silent kind of powerful optimism. At least that’s how I see it in my fertile little mind!
Not only is this season a time of real change with weather and landscape, but it also symbolizes a revived spirit, rebirth and new energy. My message today is simply to ask you to take a moment out of your busy day and allow the wonder of Mother Nature to motivate you to sprout new healthy thoughts and grow healthy behaviors. Regardless of how old you are, this can still be the springtime of your life, but only if you’re receptive to personal growth and change.
Wishing You Great Health,
Dr. John H. Sklare
