The Negative Calorie Foods Myth – Is It Real or a Joke?

Negative Calorie foods have been  talked about on  diet forums , newspaper  columns and on television, but are claims accurate Can a food actually  have negative calories or is it a myth?

We are all aware that each item of food we consume  includes calories which  we use for energy.  Extra calories are stored by the body,  resulting in unwanted fat. That’s  easy enough to  comprehend but  some nutritionists   state that  some fruit and vegetables ,  especially those that the body works harder to  process, actually  have the ability to burn  more calories  as  working through them  expends more energy than  the calories the foods have.  Really,  these types of food are not ‘Negative calorie’ foods as they actually do  have calorific content,  yet the  calories in these foods will be burned… and more, just by the act of digesting them.

For instance:

Celery has approximately 5 calories  in each serving. You  consume the celery and the act of swallowing, chewing and digesting the celery will expend over 8 calories to  finish digestion, bringing the  final  amount of calories consumed by eating the celery to a  minus number, -3!
Other foods which reportedly have a zero calorie effect include  may  unprocessed form,  for example; cucumber,  spinach, cabbage,  asparagus and grapefruit.

Even water  expends more energy  to consume than the calories it  contains  as it, of course, has no calories.

Seems amazing? Well it can be, but  there are issues to be aware of. Your body  will not work properly if  you continue to eat only these  low calorie foods to lose weight. Your body needs energy for  running,  thinking and working and if your digestive system is  using more calories than the foods that you  choose contain,  you will become ill. In addition, you will also  deny yourself of  vital fats and proteins which are necessary for a healthy diet.

An alternative option for  making the best of these  negative calorie foods  may be to opt for  a calorie controlled diet that  permits you to  eat  an adequate amount of calories for energy every day. Then, if you’re following your calorie  ingestion, but need a snack, choose a  low calorie  fruit or vegetable.   Since these calories really  are cancelled out by digestion, you can eat  them in abundance and still keep  on track with a  reduced calorie diet.

In conclusion, what do we think about the negative calorie theory? It would seem like the negative calorie theory is just another  novelty diet for  forgetting exercise by  expecting food to  eliminate more calories. Super low calorie foods are  excellent as snacks to help to keep within a calorie controlled diet; however they cannot be  depended upon as  a plan for rapid weight loss. It still seems that the  most reliable way to  reduce body mass in a healthy way is to exercise regularly and  to consume a  good variety of  nourishing foods.
