The philosophy of nutrition

A few home truths about nutrition that we cannot deny:

Firstly, most of us are overweight and many are even obese!

Secondly, most of the overweight are indifferent to their condition and don’t see it as being a threat to their health or maybe even their life.

Thirdly, a large proportion of those who realize they are overweight try various quick acting diets and go through the pain of losing some kilos only to ‘yo-yo’ back soon to obesity.

Of course there are people who want to change their lives, and some even achieve this. The key to making this change is to take an informed decision and then to learn the principles of good nutrition.

Each of us has the power to achieve this! But many have preferred to dream of the miracle cure; that magic pill or potion, the latest diet or even using the power of psychiatry or hypnosis.

I’m sorry to disappoint you – these miracle pills and diets do not work. So it’s back to you to achieve it yourself. How long does this take I hear you ask? This is not a quick fix but is rather a life change and will last forever. But then again so will the benefits!

Now getting down to the fundamental issues there is a classic phrase – we eat to live, not live to eat. But why is it that gluttony comes so easy to us and then goes on to reduce our life quality?

To answer this quandary we must understand that our body is programmed for the accumulation of excess energy derived from food. So we are programmed to be fat I hear you say but don’t take this easy answer as an excuse for not dealing with it.

Of course this programming occurred in another era to meet different circumstances. Our ancestors did not have food to hand all year around so they had to store fat when food was available and use this accumulation to survive during leaner times.

Also to find the food required a lot more energy to hunt than a drive to the local supermarket to stock up.  So we must adapt to meet the life style we have today. We need food as it gives us all of the needed nutrients and in today’s world it is a source of pleasure both to eat and as a means of enjoying others company.

So if eating is a key element of our life style today then we need to also learn how to have this enjoyment without putting on weight. Learning to eat properly and getting sufficient exercise is the way to enjoy eating and all it brings with it while feeling better, getting more from life and increasing the chances of a longer life.

We will deal with the physical activity issue at another time and simply say that for now you need to start making some changes in your life. The key is to take small achievable steps and these will bring benefits. Learn to eat and live better and those jeans that have been hiding in the cupboard for several years will suddenly fit. And you know how good that will make you feel.

Can Stress Make Your Hair Shed?

I have a blog that focuses on hair loss.  A common question that I get is “can stress or hardship cause hair loss?”  Readers commonly tell me that they go to doctors and / or dermatologists reporting hair loss and are told that only physical stress on your body can affect your hair – not mental or psychological stress.  But, if you spend any amount of time on hair loss forums, you’ll see that countless people disagree with this.  Many can find no other cause for their hair loss and shedding and can see a distinct correlation between the two.  I’ll discuss my take on the stress / hair loss combination in the following article.

Hair Loss Caused By Physical Stress:  There’s absolutely no question that physical stress and illness can cause hair loss.  One hair loss condition that fits into this category is called telogen effluvium or TE.  Common causes of this condition are pregnancy, surgery, illness, fluctuations in hormones, or changing your medications.

Another cause of hair loss is androgenic alopecia or thinning caused by DHT, sebum, or excess androgens or build up on your scalp.  With this condition, there is stress on the scalp and / or the hair follicles, but there is a problem just the same.

The Mind / Body Connection: Although specialists will tell you that mental or psychological stress doesn’t cause hair shedding or loss, I disagree.  I’ve heard too many people tell stories of this to discount it.  But, what I believe happens is that the mental stress actually translates to physical changes in your body.

For example, when you are under a great deal of hardship or anxiety, your body pumps out cortisol like mad.  This can affect your thyroid and adrenal hormones and can also produce more androgens.  So, now what started out as mental is effecting you physically and now you have  two potential causes of hair loss – changes in hormones and increased androgens.

So, while good old mental turmoil may not affect your hair directly, it can affect your body, it’s hormones, and your scalp – which all could in turn affect your hair.

Treating Stress Induced Hair Loss: Obviously, the first treatment for this is going to be to reduce your stress.  This is often easier said than done though. And of course, the more you worry about your loss, the more cortisol you pump out, so that you’re contributing to a vicious cycle.  It’s so important to take care of yourself right now and try to separate yourself from this as much as you can.

Don’t count your hairs.  Don’t constantly look in the mirror.  I used to run my fingers along the shaft of my hair to see how many would shed out.  This became almost an addictive behavior that only caused more turmoil.  Get out of the house.  Distract yourself and participate in things you enjoy.  Do whatever you have to do to break the cycle of worrying about it.

Another thing that you should address is inflammation.  Often, quick or dramatic hair loss goes hand in hand with inflammation of the scalp, because so many hairs are changing and dying off.  Using a gentle, yet anti inflammatory shampoo (you can often make these yourself for best results.) And, natural treatments like tea tree oil or emu oil can help with the inflammation and can help to also support healthy, thick regrowth.

But, it’s important to be careful to rotate your treatments. Often, the essential oils are quite thick and can clog or irritate your follicles if you’re not careful.  However, if they are diluted and rotated correctly, they can be very effective and healing.

How do I know all of this? Because I lived it. In my quest to end my hair loss, I looked at my triggers, my iron, my thyroid, my adrenals, my hormones, and my scalp’s health in my quest to end the nightmare. It was a long, hard, frustrating journey which all but wrecked my self esteem but I finally found something that helped quite a bit. Migraine Triggers

If you have ever experience a migraine, you know that it is a painful, sometimes debilitating occurrence. When I use the term migraine, I don’t mean just a headache. A migraine is usually 10 times worse than a normal headache. In addition to headaches, migraines are accompanied by altered bodily perceptions and nausea. Typical migraine symptoms last anywhere from 4 to 72 hours.

Doctors and scientists have no idea why migraines occur. Some believe that they originate in the brainstem due to intracellular transport dysfunction where as others believe migraines are genetically predisposed. Whatever the origination of migraines may be, there are several triggers that can cause an episode to occur and unfortunately most people have no idea what those triggers are so avoiding them is not an option.

However, researchers have found there are some triggers that can cause migraines in all patients, making it easier for people to replace certain foods, products or habits in their lives. Food triggers are deceptive because it could be only one food or several types of foods that trigger a migraine. Additionally if may be a specific ingredient and not necessarily a food per say. People with food triggers have a couple ways to find the food. The first is noticing that every time you eat that food it causes a migraine. Others do an elimination diet, by eliminating all potential trigger foods, then adding them back in one by one with a week in between to see if they are the trigger. Others change habits by switching out light bulbs, or perfumes that can cause migraines.

These triggers can be cut out, replaced or stayed away from to reduce the likelihood of triggering a migraine. Remember there are several more triggers than on this list, so if migraines persist try to figure out some of the additional triggers in your life.

  1. Caffeine, some peoples daily cup of energy. There are some people who feel like they can’t go with out their cup of coffee, or 3,5, 7 cups. But just as much as cutting out caffeine can be helpful to reduce migraines, caffeine withdrawal can cause them too. If you have been drinking coffee everyday for the last 20 years and you just one day quit cold turkey, your body may freak out and trigger a migraine because it is so reliant on that cup of coffee everyday.  Not to worry if you think you will have caffeine withdrawal then it is important to wean yourself off of caffeine slowly. Start cutting back everyday until you no longer need that cup of coffee.
  2. Sugar, such as Aspartame and Nutrasweet, are 2 of the leading sweeteners that have been proven to induce migraines. These two artificial sweeteners have been used in thousands of food products globally not to mention in soda. Although sugar is another huge trigger, avoid using the artificial kinds, all natural sugars like sugar in the raw are healthy for you.
  3. The three most romantic foods cheese, chocolate and wine have been shown to cause migraines. Any kind of alcohol can trigger a migraine, even wine. But chocolate contains phyenylethamine and aged cheese contains the amino acid tyramine which both have been proven to contribute to migraines. So the next time you are being romantic be a little more creative and avoid these three foods.
  4. If you are a smoker, I’m sure you have had many people tell you its bad for you.  Well for all the long lists and reasons that smoking is bad for you, in addition it could be the trigger for your migraines. If this isn’t a reason to stop smoking then I don’t know what will change your mind, but I know its hard and it won’t be easy especially if you have been smoking for a really long time. Just remember that even if you don’t smoke, second hand smoke can be a trigger as well. The best remedy is to remove yourself from that environment, whether that means you physically leaving or the smokers physically leaving.
  5. Try a different type of contraceptive rather than birth control pills. The birth control pill changes the release of hormones in a female’s body, ultimately so she won’t get pregnant. However when you start changing the way hormones are released or when they are released within the body this can have side effects such as migraines. In some instances women have changed dosages or brands with migraine relief. There are other forms of contraceptives including condoms, spermicides, IUDs, etc.
  6. Light and noise have a huge affect on migraines. Too bright or brilliant lighting can trigger migraines the same way too loud noises such as music, yelling, and banging can cause migraines. Change light bulbs to a softer wattage. Also if you work at a computer all day consider getting a screen filter or taking many breaks to avert your eyes. If you work in construction or at a concert arena, anywhere where there is loud noise consider using ear plugs or switching jobs.
  7. Smell is also a very active trigger. Perfumes and colognes are used regulary by thousands of men and women. One brand may not smell good to someone else as to the one who is wearing it. Strong odors travel and can cause other people migraines even if the wearer loves the smell. Change from using perfume or cologne to using a body wash with a scent. Scented body wash is not as strong as perfume and clings to the skin so is rarely smelled from far away. Plus scented body wash doubles as a cleanser and a good aroma.
  8. Stay hydrated.  Our body’s are made up of 75% water, therefore staying hydrated is important for continued living. However, when the body becomes dehydrated it causes symptoms of thirst, fatigue, muscle weakness, dizziness, confusion and headaches or migraines. To function properly it is important to replace the water that our body excretes and secretes through normal body functioning. Therefore by drinking 64-80 ounces of water a day you are replacing what the body secretes through spit, sweat, and urine.
  9. Get enough sleep. Sleep is important to allow the brain to shut down and reboot. Not getting enough sleep or too little sleep can cause the brain to function abnormally and cause side effects of exhaustion, dizziness, confusion, headaches, migraines and dehydration. Get into a sleep pattern to regulate the bodies functioning. If you go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday your body will regulate its processes and decrease painful symptoms.

10.  Do some cardio. Get the heart rate up and your blood pumping. Improper blood flow throughout the body can cause migraines. Therefore by regulating the blood flow through proper exercise the body will correct any problems that had occurred. Little to no activity can cause obesity and decreased blood flow to a specific area. Thirty minutes of moderate exercise a day is recommended to stay fit.

11.  Change in weather, air pressure, temperature, and pollution can cause migraines to occur.  We cannot predict when the weather is going to change. One day it can be hot and the next day it can rain. However being prepared fore changes in weather can help regulate the onset of a migraine. Keep track of weather patterns, or change in air pollution to know when you can go outside. Also always drive or travel by train when you can instead of flying. Changes in altitude and air pressure have a significant affect on migraines.

There are thousands of triggers in our environment. Some easier than others to figure out. If you know what triggers your migraines make simple changes to reduce the contributors to migraines. It can change your life!

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata

Sometime ago, in fact you had a hairy head but now this pricks you more than a needle when you look into the mirror and regret for no longer having that much density of hair but instead some small bald patches on your head scalp that continue to develop with passage of time disheartens you. The situation becomes sometimes even more disapproving and embarrassing, especially when someone special passes taunts on the hair loss. Incidentally, if you suffer from this critical condition, there is nothing like to lose your heart, as luckily there are a few different good solutions available today. Here is the nitty-gritty of the Alopecia Areta that you will like to read:

CAUSES:

Alopecia Areata is a medical term referring to what we commonly call “baldness”, which can make anyone its victim—age and gender are no bar—from a teenager guy/gal to a middle-aged man/woman, anyone can suffer from it . Unlike other conditions, the signs of Alopecia Areata are noticeable easily and instantly but the severity varies from person to person. In the preliminary stages of this condition, there is slight hair loss, not easily noticeable to the eyes, which is susceptible to worse sooner or later if no proper care or medication is followed. What actually causes Alopecia Areata to take place is ambiguous to the medical industry. However one rather possible cause of Alopecia Areata presumed by majority of medical professionals seems to be genetic that passes from one generation to another. So, anyone who suffers from this condition can presumably ensure the underlying cause to be one of his/her parents, especially when they also genetically suffer from it, so they can assume that it is a never-ending lifecycle

SYMPTOMS:

As already specified that it is pretty simply to identify the symptoms of Alopecia Areata one can be aware of it by apparently noticing the loss of hair in form small round patches on the head that sooner or later get severe whilst triggering the formation of additional patches on the scalp. The specific area is generally susceptible to cause pain on even a slight touch. No one knows for sure what causes the condition to take place, or if the lost hair will restore later. In many cases, the lost hair spontaneously restore in due course of time while in other cases such a miracle do not take place.

TREATMENT:

To get rid of Alopecia Areata, although there are a few important effective treatment techniques in use like Topical Minoxidi, Provillus, Steroid injections and creams etc. that are injected into the affected area and yet the effect is subject to vary from patient to patient. Alternatively, you can choose to wear wigs to conceal the baldness seemingly. The available modish wigs are basically designed in a way that one can never figure out as if they are person’s real hair or a wig.

Whatever the case is, in case of Alopecia Areta, one should never linger in consulting a doctor for proper treatment.

What are Migraines

Migraines, you hear about them how painful and debilitating they can be, but for someone who has never had one, they don’t understand the difference between a normal headache and a migraine. For someone who has migraines they can go on forever disorienting the person with nausea, headaches, dizziness, confusion and several more symptoms. Migraines for many people are so bad they have to stay at home with the blinds closed in bed until the migraine symptoms pass. So what is a migraine and why is so bad?

Migraines are considered a neurological syndrome or attack that is characterized by altered bodily perception, headaches and nausea. Unfortunately, as if the pain of migraine isn’t enough, migraines have four phases that can last from 4 hours up to 72 hours. Not every person who suffers from migraines goes through each phase of a migraine and each migraine attack can be a different component of a migraine.

The four phases of a migraine are the prodrome, aura, headache and postdrome. The prodrome can occur hours or days before a migraine attack. The aura immediately precedes the migraine. The headache or pain phase as it is known is self-explanatory. And the postdrome follows the migraine.

The prodrome or the time before a migraine occurs can start days or only hours before. The prodrome is a warning to signify a migraine is coming on. Only about 40% of people who get migraines experience a prodrome. However, when a prodrome occurs it also gives the person a chance to abort a migraine attack before it happens. Symptoms that are associated with the prodrome include constipation, diarrhea, mood changes, depression, irritability, muscle stiffness, food cravings, fatigue, yawning and increased urination.

The aura immediately precedes the migraine and sometimes can occur on its own without a migraine. The aura phase normally occurs over 5-20 minutes lasting no longer than 60 minutes. The aura is a focal neurological phenomenon that includes a wide array of symptoms from visual to olfactory, paresthesia, aphasia, paralysis, auditory and allodynia. Only about 25% of people with migraines experience the aura phase. Because most of the symptoms are visual, this phase can be scary, disturbing, and terrifying especially when experiencing it for the first time. Other symptoms include flashing lights, wavy lines, spots, blurred vision, smelly odors, pins and needles, numbness, difficulty speaking, confusion, dizziness, hearing things, loss of hearing, reduced sensation, hypersensitivity, and flashes of light.

As if the first two phases weren’t enough the pain or headache phase is normally the most incapacitating. Headaches are normally on one side but can span the whole bodies length. The onset is usually gradual and builds to a peak and then subsides. The headache can last any where from 1 to 3 days in length. Everyone’s symptoms are different in the way that they appear and some may experience different symptoms than others. Headaches are normally accompanied by nausea and vomiting and symptoms are worsened by physical activity. Additional symptoms include increased sensitivity to light, sound and odors, diarrhea and constipation, congestion or runny nose, depression, anxiety, hot flashes or the chills, vertigo, confusion, and dehydration.

The postdrome are the hours following a headache. Some people take longer than others to recover but most feel tired, run down or have a hungover feeling.  This is normally accompanied by head pain, cognitive difficulties, gastrointestinal symptoms, mood changes, weakness, depression, euphoria, and fatigue. Some people feel refreshed while others feel depressed. There is no way to tell how you will feel after going through that. When people experience the aura without the headache it is normal to experience the postdrome as well.

Now that you understand what a migraine is and what can occur throughout the migraine attack, it is easier to support and aid someone who sufferers from migraines. Remember that not everyone experiences all the phases of a migraine but even experience symptoms from just one of the phases seems like a great deal of pain to go through. Be thankful if you don’t experience migraine headaches because about 6-8% of men and 15-17% of women experience migraine headaches.

What is Alzheimer's

Alzheimer’s disease is a serious condition that affects the elderly every day. As frightening as Alzheimer’s can be to the person who is diagnosed, it can be just as frightening to family and friends. Family and friends have to contend with losing the love, memories and friendship of their loved one. Where as the person who has Alzheimer’s normally feels as if they are losing their mind and ultimately the inability to do normal everyday activities. The thought of this disease invading one’s life and family are frightening, but early recognition and treatment are about the only way to help in the fight against this disease at the moment.

Alzheimer’s is currently an incurable disease. As well, doctors and scientists have several theories but no positive conclusions on how this disease develops. Even diagnoses are not easy since many of the early signs of Alzheimer’s are dismissed as symptoms of aging. Therefore many patients who are diagnosed are diagnosed later on where it is person is already severely disabled by the disease.

Early signs of Alzheimer’s can be as minimal as forgetting a name, a phone number or even a memory. This is also a normal part of aging and therefore dismissed by family. Unfortunately this early sign of Alzheimer’s can be diagnosed and treatment to slow down the progression of the disease can be set up. The next sign after forgetfulness is trouble or inability to perform normal everyday tasks such as tying your shoes or buttoning a blouse. This inability to remember or perform functions causes a person to become very frustrated.

It is at this point in time the persons normal characteristics start to change. As someone who is aging, they do not like to feel like they can’t do something, especially if it is easy everyday tasks. Reverting inward, holding onto their feelings, and denying their inability to function are normal reactions for a person with Alzheimer’s.  A normally cheery, happy grandma or grandpa can become short, nasty and curt. They tend to lash out at people who try to help them because they feel that people are pitying them or treating them like a child.

Ultimately recall and memory become a thing of the past and the ability to perform tasks goes out the window. Due to the worsening symptoms Alzheimer’s patients can end up losing their ability to speak, walk, and can end up paralyzed. It is at this point where many families give up caring for the person with Alzheimer’s. Nursing homes provide 24 hour, professional care. This route is normally very upsetting to both the patient and the family and can cause feelings of guilt and anxiety.

This is why it is so important to notice the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s as early as possible.  People who are diagnosed early can be given programs and steps to take to slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s. Families are encouraged to aid and help their family members to stick to a schedule, support their needs and overall help them with recall and memory. The idea is to help the person rather then discourage them. Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is just as disheartening to the family of a person. Support groups are available for the families to come to terms and boost their attitude to help their family members.

Migraine Management

Migraines are painful syndromes that attack men and women all over the world on a daily basis, some with no relief. Managing and treating migraines is an ongoing process because of the increasing number of triggers, treatments and prescriptions available. Not to mention that not everyone experiences the same symptomology or can get relief from the same treatment. The objective for people who suffer from migraines is to empower yourself to manage the symptoms, the onset and the treatment of each migraine that may occur.

Experiencing a migraine for the first time can be scary and painful. But after experiencing it 3 times in the same week can be not only debilitating but also exhausting. Managing your migraines is important if you suffer from regularly induced migraines. The first step to managing your migraines is through diagnosis and education. Not everyone suffers from the same type of migraines and if you don’t know what kind you suffer from how are you going to be able to treat it. Learn about your condition and the symptoms you suffer from. Treatments may be available for only certain types of migraine sufferers but until you find out, you won’t know. Find a doctor who will advocate for you and your condition. Your doctor has to be a partner in your treatment steps as well as your diagnosis. Most doctors will just send you on your way once they diagnose you. A doctor who makes decisions with you and not for you will continue to help you along your management journey until you find the right treatment steps that work for you.

Triggers are the main cause of migraine attacks. Identifying what triggers your migraine attacks is vital in reducing and eliminating your migraines. Triggers can range from food, weather, air pollutants, odors, aromas, cigarettes, perfumes, sleeping problems, and circulation problems. Many of these triggers can be avoided or eliminated from your everyday lifestyle, which can reduce the occurrence of migraines. In addition to reducing triggers, treatments are available to reduce migraine activity. There are three types of treatments preventative, abortive and rescue.

Preventative treatment is recommended for people who have 3 or more migraine headaches in one month. Preventative medication should be taking daily to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. Although, most people are reluctant to take medication for the rest of their life, this medication can make life much easier and peaceful to live. The FDA has approved a total of four medications for migraine prevention Inderal, Blocadren, Depakote and Topomax. These medications consist of beta blockers and neuronal stabilizing agents since the migraine starts in the brain neurons. In addition to these four medications there are several hundred more medications that are considered off-label prescriptions. This is when a medication is prescribed for conditions other than it was originally developed for. Some of these types of medications include blood pressure medications, antihistamines, antidepressants, enzyme inhibitors, muscle relaxers, and medications for ADD, and dementia and dietary supplements such as Co Q10, Vitamin B2 and magnesium. Check with your doctor before taking any medication or supplement.

The second type of treatment is abortive treatment, used to stop a migraine attack in its tracks. When you stop the migraine process it stops the symptoms as well. However in some instances the postdrome or hangover type feeling may still occur. Abortive medications reverse the affects of a headache by constricting the blood vessels and reducing inflammation to the surrounding nerves and tissues. Medications include triptans such as imitrex, maxalt, zomig, ergotamines such as migranal nasal spray and DHE-45, and isometheptene such as midrin. Combination medications are being studied to see if one medication will work on the blood vessels and the other work on the inflammation.

Rescue medications are the last treatment. Rescue medications are to be taken in the event that an abortive fails or the person cannot take an abortive. Rescue medications are primarily pain relievers, to mask the pain during a migraine attack. Some medications include Butalbital compounds, Acetaminophen, analgesics, Antinausea medications, and muscle relaxants.  It is recommended that everyone who suffers from migraines keep a rescue treatment available.
