Easy Way to Lose Weight: Three Essential Elements

For most, thinking of starting a diet the priority is to find an easy way to lose weight; a method that will help them reach their goals with as little discomfort as possible so by increasing chances of success.

The problem encountered by most when commencing their weight-loss journey is being lured by advertisements and clever sales copy into purchasing the latest fad diet or gimmick-the vast majority of which fail to deliver on their sales pitch promises of the quick fix that we so desperately want to believe in. So what is the answer? Is there an easy way to lose weight or is this just an elusive fantasy?

The fact is that there is no miracle pill, it stands to reason that if there was everyone would be using it and obesity would no longer be the pending epidemic it threatens to become. That said, doesn’t mean that losing weight has to be a laborious and torturous activity; the correct approach combined with a few simple rules can ensure that discomfort and cravings are kept to a minimum and the chances of reaching your target weight are increased exponentially.

The golden rule is to find a weight-loss plan or diet that is right for you personally-a plan that suits your lifestyle and tastes. It’s no good basing your new regime on for example, shakes and soups if this means that you’re left suffering hunger pangs that you are unable to tolerate. Similarly those with a busy lifestyle may find a diet requiring large amounts of preparation or the inconvenience of weighting each item far too time consuming. It’s also worth bearing in mind that the majority of people who successfully reach their target weight end up re-gaining it. Often the reason for this is that they choose plans that they simply cannot, or have no incentive to stick to once they’ve reached their goal; a more effective longer term strategy is to use this time as an opportunity to change eating habits for the better.

The second essential element is to begin slowly, most people decide on their ‘start date’ and cut out all prohibited foods from day one. The problem with this approach is that it means going from one extreme to the other; from eating calorie dense foodstuffs’ that caused us to be overweight in the first place to a restricted regime. A far more sensible approach is to cut out such foods gradually, over a two-three week period, whilst simultaneously reducing portion sizes. The advantage of this method is three-fold; firstly it encourages us to take the plunge and make a start-the thought of cutting out all the ‘goodies’ prevents many from taking that first initial step.  Secondly it’s easy to follow as it’s merely a case of cutting down, finally it proves to ourselves that we can live without a diet consisting of large portions, laden with fat and sugar.

The third essential element required in order to make weight loss easier is good planning and organisation. By taking an hour to plan a menu and purchase food items’ for the week

ahead will mean that you will always have ‘diet compliant’ items available so won’t be tempted off track when you arrive home from work after a busy day only to find that you cupboards contain barred foods.

Macrobiotic Diet Foods – An Overview

“Let food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be food.”
-Hippocrates

The benefits of macrobiotic diet foods are becoming increasingly recognized. Over the last several decades, the macrobiotic diet has been the catalyst for positive dietary and lifestyle changes around the world. The word “Macrobiotics” comes from the Greek term makro bios, meaning “long life” or “great life”. Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, coined the term, and in the modern era it has been utilized by George Ohsawa, Michio Kushi, and other educators in Japan, Europe, and America. Macrobiotics relies heavily on organically grown whole foods and naturally processed foods, including whole cereal grains such as brown rice, whole wheat, oats, and buckwheat; soy foods such as miso, shoyu (natural soy sauce), and tempeh; an abundance of fresh garden vegetables; nori, kombu, and other sea vegetables; and a variety of seasonings, condiments, snacks, and other healthy foods and beverages.

A major part of the macrobiotic diet philosophy is bringing awareness and attention to how specific foods affect the physical and mental state of an individual. Instead of blindly following dietary “rules”, macrobiotics emphasizes the effects of food on health and wellness. Choosing less processed and more nutrient-dense foods positively contributes to your physical health and emotional well-being. By building our bodies from natural whole foods in a spirit of thankfulness, we can greatly improve our physical health and emotional well-being. Harvard Medical School cardiovascular researchers have reported that people eating macrobiotic diet foods for an average of two years have virtually no risk of coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death in America today.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body and the brain. The brain uses almost 25 percent of the calories you eat relying primarily on carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates, or simple sugars, include table sugar, honey, corn syrup, and fructose. Simple sugars are absorbed quickly into the bloodstream. This quick absorption may give you a burst of energy, but it’s often followed by an energy crash or depression.

Complex carbohydrates are found in whole grains and vegetables. They are slowly absorbed into the bloodstream, stabilizing blood sugar levels, giving the body consistent energy throughout the day, and providing a significant beneficial impact on anxiety and depression disorders.

Proteins

Proteins form the major building blocks of our muscles, organs, glands, bones, teeth, skin, nails, and hair. Protein is necessary for the creation and purification of all body tissues. Proteins are made up of twenty-two building blocks called amino acids. Nine amino acids are called ‘essential’ because the body cannot produce them, and must be absorbed from food or taken as a nutritional supplement.

Fats and Oils

Fats and oils act as major structural components in the membranes which surround the body’s trillions of cells. They are an important source of energy for the body and have important functions in the building and maintenance of healthy cells.

Saturated fats, found mostly in animal products, tend to stick together and deposit within the cells, organs, and arteries. When eaten in excess, this clumping of saturated fats has been shown to cause major health problems including obesity, depression, and diabetes.

Unsaturated fats are found mostly in nuts, seeds, vegetables, and fish. They are soluble in the body, and allow the molecules within the cell membranes to make and break contact with one another in order to fulfill their vital chemical and nutritional functions.

Minerals

The macrobiotic diet is highly focused on sufficient minerals being supplied to the body because a healthy body relies on minerals for proper functioning. Minerals regulate your acid-alkaline balance, hormonal and enzymatic activity, electrical movement in the nervous system, and oxygen transport in the body. Minerals cannot be created by the body so they must be obtained from foods and nutritional supplements.

Minerals are necessary for maintaining healthy nerve function, balancing the composition of body fluids, forming new blood and bone cells and regulating muscle tone, including cardiovascular muscles. Minerals enable our bodies to grow, heal, and produce energy, and are essential for the assimilation of vitamins and other vital nutrients.

Vitamins

Vitamins, like minerals, are an essential macrobiotic diet factor, and are responsible for the metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. They are also responsible for building body tissues and for cellular energy exchanges. It’s very important to eat a wide variety of foods to get adequate amounts of all vitamins.

Enzymes

Enzymes regulate the chemical activities in all living organisms. They do this by accelerating, stimulating or catalyzing some change in another substance. They are needed for the breakdown, digestion and assimilation of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Enzymes are found in fresh foods and in fermented foods recommended by the macrobiotic diet.

Water

Water is a very important component of the macrobiotic diet. Eighty percent of our body weight is water. It is vital to all the body functions, including muscular movement, digestion, temperature regulation, cellular detoxification, and the transport and burning of fat. Always use the purest water available for drinking, cooking and bathing to prevent the absorption of harmful chemical residues, heavy metals, chlorine, and fluoride.

As you can see, it’s easy and simple to gain the benefit from eating macrobiotic diet foods. This simple lifestyle simply requires that you be more mindful of the foods that you eat, how they are prepared, and your emotional relationship to your food. Proper eating is a major step toward relieving anxiety and depression. Be happy, eat well.

Sinus Infection Toothache Vs Ordinary Toothache

If you are suffering from a toothache, the first thing you might want to do is to go to a dentist to have a checkup and see what is wrong with your teeth. But in some cases, a tooth cavity, abscesses or any other dental problem might not be the cause of the pain. If this is the case, then you are probably experiencing sinus infection toothache .

If you are not aware, then you should know that there is a connection between the maxillary sinuses and the upper teeth. The roots of the upper teeth known as maxillary molars extend to the maxillary sinuses, and so when the maxillary sinuses are infected, one of the symptoms that might be manifested is pain in the upper teeth or what is known as sinus infection toothache. There are some cases wherein a dental infection can also lead to sinus related infection as well, and due to the close connection, it is sometimes confusing to differentiate the two conditions.

Although these conditions are sometimes confusing, there are simple steps that you can take to determine which exactly you are suffering from. You can rule out dental problems if you are already having other sinus infection symptoms such as runny nose, headaches, clogged nose, post-nasal drip, sore throat, or facial pain. If you have a history of a sinus infection, then it is possible that you are experiencing another bout and the pain in the teeth that you are feeling is actually a sinus infection toothache .

If you are not confident on deciding on your own, you can get a more reliable and accurate diagnosis by visiting your physician and let him check on your condition. Using percussion test, your dentist can easily evaluate your teeth and be able to identify the possible dental problem. Pain in a single tooth may be due to a cavity or other dental problems, while a pain in all of your teeth might be an indication of a sinus infection toothache. When you are suffering from the latter condition given, then visiting an ENT specialist can help you out since they can identify what is causing your sinus related infection and they can give you the right course of treatment right away.

An ordinary toothache caused by a dental problem is easier to eliminate. Compared to this, a sinus infection toothache due to sinusitis is a lot more complicated. The bad news is that, this usually comes with severe pain and discomfort. However, relief is still possible as long as you are following your physician’s advice and you are taking your prescribed medications on time. There are available home remedies that can be helpful in relieving sinus infection toothache as well. But above all, maintaining a good immune system is the best preventive measure you can take to avoid this kind of condition.

Butter vs. Shortening?

Butter vs. Shortening?

I visit a farmer’s market at least once a week. On one particular visit I had an argument with a vendor over her homemade cookies. She offered a sample which I happily accepted. She went on tell me the ingredients of her cookie and its nutritional merits. I then asked if it was an all butter cookie. She answered no, that it was a shortening cookie made with zero trans fat shortening. This made my blood boil. I told her that I wished I would have know before I tasted the cookie. A debate followed and before you judge as another food snob let me tell you why…

My maternal great-grandparents were farmers in the Azores islands of Portugal. If you’ve never head of the Azores check them out. They’re a gorgeous subtropical archipelago of islands in the middle of the Atlantic ocean between Lisbon and New York City. There are 9 islands which were settled by the Portuguese in the 15th century. They are extremely rural and charming. My great-grandparents immigrated in the early 1900‘s and they continued to farm after they arrived in the Northern California foothills. My family still raises cows, grows fruit and fresh herbs are never far from reach. This time of year (winter) our family shares its satsuma mandarins with family friends and other local farmers who in turn share things like persimmons, butternut squash, grapefruit and Meyer lemons. Eating local is something I grew up doing and going to the farmer’s market every week with family is something I look forward to.

I also believe in trying to buy organic food when ever possible. A few years ago my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She decided to forgo chemotherapy and instead she did an all natural detox and ate only organic foods. The whole family learned a lot from her experience and I’m happy to say the cancer has not returned.

Being a Portuguese family we have a deep love for baking and devouring baked goods. Every holiday is an amazing excuse to indulge. Also, my mother has been making wedding cakes my whole life. This has instilled a deep love of cake in everybody. The tradition of baking Portuguese sweet bread or massa sovada as we call it was passed on to me and my interest in baking grew. As I started to do my own research and baking exploration I gravitated to ingredients and recipes that were as all natural and organic as possible. Pastries such as pies, cookies and cakes are all made with some kind of fat. Butter, lard, oil or shortening are the most commonly used. I experimented and baked with all of them but never shortening. My mother used shortening for pie crusts as many people of her generation do. My grandmother and aunts taught me shortening would prevent cookies from spreading and even some of my mother’s pre-bought cake icings were made with shortening to hold better shape and resist melting. I just wasn’t convinced so I did some research into what exactly shortening is and is it safe to eat.

Shortening is traditionally made by partially hydrogenating vegetable oils into a semi-solid state which can then be used as a cheaper and longer lasting substitute for natural animal fats such as butter or lard. However, the process produces trans fats which we’ve all heard can lead to a myriad of adverse health effects. I understand the desire to use shortening, it inhibits the formation of gluten which helps produce tender pie crusts, fluffy biscuits and cakes. It’s cheaper and creates baked goods that will have a longer shelf life. You can even buy butter flavored shortening since the unflavored doesn’t have a strong flavor but things that are artificially flavored are never a healthy choice. Why would you use something artificially flavored like butter when you could just use butter? Butter tastes amazing on it’s own I can’t say the same for shortening or margarine. I’ve tasted shortening biscuits that while fluffy, left a plastic like film in my mouth and had less flavor than a butter biscuit.

You can buys many shortenings today which print they have zero grams of trans fat or even organic shortenings which means that organic oils were used to make the shortening. After some research I found out that “On July 11, 2003, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a regulation requiring manufacturers to list trans fat on the Nutrition Facts panel of foods and some dietary supplements. The new labeling rule became mandatory across the board, even for companies that petitioned for extensions, on January 1, 2008. However, unlike in many other countries, trans fat levels of less than 0.5 grams per serving can be listed as 0 grams trans fat on the food label.” (see article) So even if it is marked zero trans fat it probably still contains some. This is what I tried to explain to the cookie lady but she wasn’t having it.

This information combined with the desire to honor my great-grandparents and all those before them who cooked without processed foods but with the natural ingredients around them. So I encourage you to choose a natural fat in your baking instead of shortening. I have been making wonderfully flaky and tasty pie crusts for years without shortening. I’ve made cookies, other pastries and cake icings with all butter and they have not suffered.

Here are two tips for baking with butter:

Chill your dough thoroughly which will help it hold it’s shape not only for pie dough but when you roll out and cut cookies.

If you want a chewy cookie do not over bake if anything I like to under bake them.

Doesn't Everyone Want to Lower Cholesterol without Drugs? I know I do!

A profound health drive has taken a grip on the world over recent years. Gym memberships have risen exponentially, supermarkets need to stock an ever expanding range of healthy fruits, vegetables and pre-prepared meals.  Now, fast food giants, most recently KFC are being forced to jump on the healthy-eating bandwagon and must now list the calorie content of their meals in an attempt to attract more health conscious customers.  Topping the list of a large number of peoples’ concerns is high cholesterol, most notably because it contributes so highly to heart illnesses and disease.  But, these same people who are so concerned about healthy, organic and free range food don’t want to take drugs to boost their health, they want to do it naturally, they want to lower cholesterol without drugs.

Now, whether or not you are able to lower cholesterol without drugs depends, not only on your own levels of cholesterol, HDL and LDL but also on your susceptibility or risk to heart illness.  For some unfortunate people amongst us, this may be decided by a little more than how much you exercise or how much fatty food you consume.  High cholesterol can be passed down genetically as a condition called Familial Hyperlipidaemia (FH) and unfortunately for those that inherit that condition, there may be no alternative than to visit your doctor for a course of medication.  Age and gender also contribute to high cholesterol.  However, don’t fret, it’s not all that bad as the majority of us who have developed high cholesterol have done it to ourselves through a course of little or no exercise, a diet consisting of fatty food, including plenty of red meat, cakes, donuts, butter and a serious lack of vegetables and fruit.

If you did it to yourself, then surely it’s possible to undo it right!  Absolutely.  Start exercising, not only will you lose weight, obesity is another contributor to high cholesterol, but you will reduce your overall cholesterol levels and increase you levels of good, HDL, cholesterol.  If you’ve never exercised before, or the last time you did it was in gym class then there is a whole world of fun ways to get fit for you to discover.  Try walking for about half an hour at least four times a week.  If you live close to work then walk in and home each day.  Once you’ve established a base level of fitness then you take it to the next level, start jogging or perhaps a gentle weights program.  I promise that you will love the results, a healthy heart and a much more toned body.

Next on your list of ways to lower cholesterol without drugs is to cut out the bad food, some of which I mentioned a little earlier.  Begin by eating a diet that relies less on fatty, saturated fat loaded meats and pastries and more on healthy vegetables, fruit, leaner meats and most importantly omega-3 enriched fish.  If you are looking for more ideas on great foods to eat that enable you to lower cholesterol without drugs then there is a plethora of information on the internet about it.  What I want to impart onto you is the importance that you must place on food and exercise as your primary means of lowering cholesterol.  This principle will form a solid foundation for you to build a healthy heart upon.

How to Break Weight Loss Plateau for Vegetarians

I’m not surprised that some vegetarians hit weight loss plateau in the mid of their weight loss regimen. Like anyone, vegetarians can get stuck somewhere when they break the rules of health. Here’s what you can do to overcome the plateau and continue to slim down till you reach your ideal weight and shape.

1. Get All-Round Nutrients

Imagine every breakfast you eat oatmeal, low-fat salad for lunch and curried chickpeas for dinner, how many pounds do you expect to lose with that boring vegetarian weight loss diet?

Even changing the meal plan a bit is not enough. Get creative and start eating more varieties of food. For example, today your breakfast is protein smoothie, tomorrow it becomes oatmeal with fresh strawberries, then day after make rainbow salad as breakfast. Same goes for your lunch and dinner. Obtaining full spectrum of nutrients through food varieties is one effective way to break weight loss plateau for vegetarians.

2. Create a Pulse-Like Calorie Vegetarian Diet for Weight Loss

When you keep eating a fixed amount of calories, your body will auto-adjust to burn just that amount, nothing more, nothing less. To overcome this “defect”, change your caloric intake every few days.

Assuming you need about 1800 calories a day. Take it for 3 days, then on day 4 switch to a lower calorie meal, say 1600 calories. And on day 5, get back to 1800 calories for 3 days again. Repeat this cycle and you’ll see more of your body fat get burned off.

3. Turn to Interval Exercises

Overweight vegetarians who engage in interval workouts are relatively more likely to break weight loss plateau. Thanks to the varying pattern of the exercise intensity level and routine.

For example, stop doing the same old brisk-walking every day. Start doing walk-jog-walk-jog to make your metabolism work a bit more. Stop doing fast push-ups, start slowing down its pace and you’ll raise the intensity level, thus increasing your metabolism further.

Whatever you do with your exercise, inject changes every other day to give your metabolism something new to work with, and you’ll break weight loss plateau and lose weight with exercise easily.

4. Snack Up

Insert healthy snacks like fresh fruits or nuts & seeds in between your main meals like this: breakfast, snack (morning), lunch, snack (afternoon), dinner.

This will keep your metabolism at an active level throughout the day. And particularly effective to beat your mid-afternoon slump.

5. Never Skip Breakfast

Skipping breakfast won’t make you lose more fat. Instead, it will make you absorb more unnecessary calories when you start taking your lunch. So, pick up your breakfast to break weight loss plateau.

Breaking Vegetarian Weight Loss Plateau to Lose More Fat

“I’ve lost 40 pounds and I still got 20 more pounds to go, but no matter what I do, I seem to have hit a weight loss plateau, and it lasted for 4 weeks. Help!”, cried a desperate overweight vegetarian.

When I probe further, I found out that she takes everything vegetarian except vegetables. She simply hates the vegetable scent, texture and color… everything about vegetables. So, she shuns vegetables in almost every meal.

Many vegetarians become baffled and frustrated over their weight loss plateau – they can lose the initial tens of pounds but how come after some time those stored fats just stop coming off.

Look. Metabolism is a chemical reaction of body cells responsible for burning calories in your body. When you keep feeding the same specific group of nutrients to those cells and depriving them of other key nutrients, yes, you can still shed some pounds over few weeks, but thereafter, your cells will lose their drive to burn fat further.

In other words, your metabolism becomes stagnant. You won’t grow fat. You won’t lose any either. You get stuck at a weight loss plateau even on a vegetarian diet.

You can never obtain all-round nutrients with a limited group of foods. You must increase the range of your food choices. Hence, don’t get picky about food. But I’m not asking you to lay your hands on processed vegetarian foods.

How to Increase Your Vegetable Intake to Break Weight Loss Plateau

Not taking enough vegetables is one of the common causes of weight loss plateau for vegetarians. Thus, add more vegetables in your vegetarian weight loss meals starting today.

One trick I always use on those overweight vegetarians who do not like vegetables – just blend vegetables with other fruits, nuts and grains into smoothies using these ingredients:

- 2 cups spinach

- 1 carrot

- 2 bananas

- 1 mango

- 1 cup strawberries

- 1 cup water

That way, the smell of vegetables will become almost “invisible”, and you can gain the nutritional values and give your metabolism a power boost. Feel free to change those ingredients in every smoothie, but do remember to include at least 2 types of veggies in it.

Ta-da, you break your weight loss plateau and lose more fat.

Bear in mind, this strategy does not work for you if you’re still indulging in your chemical-laden processed vegetarian food. Imagine you’re drinking this smoothie in the morning, yet on the other hand you’re eating a fat-storing processed vegetarian diet for your lunch and dinner, how on earth can you expect apparent fat loss result? Make sense?

I like to quote this line which I learn from a friend: “Either you do your best, or you don’t do at all.”

When you apply her tried-and-true techniques and whip up the nutrient-dense, delicious fat loss recipes inside the program, you’ll improve your health, break your weight loss plateau, lose your belly fat and get in shape without having loose skin and weight rebound.
